Assessment and Outpatient Treatment of Suicidal Teens (ages 13-18)

  • Complete psychiatric evaluation and risk assessment.
  • Comprehensive treatment program based on the cognitive-behavioral therapy model that targets the individual needs of each suicidal adolescent.

 


Training and Education

The STAR-Center provides:

  • Internship placement for Master's level and Ph.D. students.
  • Internship placements for psychiatric residents.
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy training.

 


Support Groups

STAR-Center provides psychoeducational groups for parents of children with mood disorders, surviviors of suicide and bereavement as well as a children's grief group.

Survivors of Suicide (SOS/Bereavement Groups)

  • The purpose of the group is to give survivors an opportunity, in a safe environment, to voice the many painful feelings that suicide leaves in its wake.
  • A professionally-led support group to help members cope with the death of a loved one from suicide.
  • Open to anyone over 18 years of age, and with any type of relationship to the deceased.
  • There is a monthly group for those who have participated in the weekly group.
  • Brief individual counseling is also available.

Children's Grief Group
  • A grief support group can provide children with the opportunity to share their experiences with others who have also lost someone.  The group leaders can help children to learn more about how to express their feelings and more about the natural processes of grief.
  • A professionally-led support group to help members cope with the death of a loved one.
  • Open to children ages 5 to 18 who are family members of the deceased.
  • Meets weekly for 4 to 8 sessions.
  • There is a monthly group available for those who have participated in the weekly group.
  • Children may share their feelings in a supportive atmosphere while going through the grief process.

Community Awareness

  • STAR-Center develops school and community programs and workshops that alert parents, teenagers, and professionals to the signs and symptoms found in suicidal adolescents.
  • STAR-Center staff offers various on site training designed specifically for school personnel, community organizations, mental health agencies and groups.

 


Postvention Activities

  • STAR-Center moves quickly to implement programs in communities and schools immediately following a suicide.
  • Teams from STAR-Center help school officials, families, and students to express their grief and cope with the loss.
  • Termed postvention, or after-the-fact programs, these sessions are designed to prevent further suicides through increased communication and awareness.
