Postvention Activities
Assessment and Outpatient Treatment
of Suicidal Teens
(ages 13-18)
- Complete psychiatric
evaluation and risk assessment.
- Comprehensive treatment
program based on the cognitive-behavioral therapy model that targets the
individual needs of each suicidal adolescent.

Training and Education
The STAR-Center provides:
- Internship placement for
Master's level and Ph.D. students.
- Internship placements for
psychiatric residents.
- Cognitive-behavioral
therapy training.

Support Groups
STAR-Center provides psychoeducational groups
for parents of children with mood disorders, surviviors of suicide and
bereavement as well as a children's grief group.

Community Awareness
- STAR-Center develops
school and community programs and workshops that alert parents, teenagers,
and professionals to the signs and symptoms found in suicidal adolescents.
- STAR-Center staff offers
various on site training designed specifically for school personnel,
community organizations, mental health agencies and groups.

Postvention Activities
- STAR-Center moves quickly
to implement programs in communities and schools immediately following a
suicide.
- Teams from STAR-Center
help school officials, families, and students to express their grief and
cope with the loss.
- Termed postvention, or
after-the-fact programs, these sessions are designed to prevent further
suicides through increased communication and awareness.
