Background

Suicide was the second leading cause of death among adolescents and had increased by 20% over the past decade. Most teens who died by suicide had their last medical visit in a primary care setting. This research center carried out three studies to help pediatric primary care providers (PCPs) better identify, manage, and support teens who were depressed or suicidal.

Study 1: Decision Support System (DSS)

  • We created a digital decision support system to guide PCPs in making treatment recommendations.
  • The system considered how severe the teen’s symptoms were, as well as barriers, attitudes, and treatment preferences.
  • This helped PCPs follow best practices when teens screened positive for depression or suicidal thoughts.

Study 2: Personalized Texting Intervention

  • We developed and tested a texting program to improve attendance at treatment appointments.
  • The messages were personalized to address motivation, readiness, and barriers for both teens and their parents.
  • This approach aimed to increase the low rate of follow-through after a positive depression screen.

Study 3: Safety Planning App

  • We built and tested an app to guide PCPs when a teen was found to be suicidal during routine screening.
  • The app helped create a safety plan and stabilize the teen, reducing unnecessary emergency room visits and hospitalizations.

These studies used technology to personalize care based on each teen’s needs and situation. They were expected to make a big impact by improving treatment attendance and reducing suicide attempts among high-risk teens.
