"The loss of a young life to suicide has profound, far-reaching and rippling effects on everyone around them. As a pre-teen, I experienced the loss of a young adult family member to suicide. That experience has impacted my clinical, research, and volunteer activities through the course of my career. From the time I stepped foot onto the adolescent psychiatric inpatient unit during my junior year of nursing school, I knew this was the population I was meant to work with. Today, the need for better upstream suicide prevention and early intervention has never been greater. For every child, adolescent and young adult who has been affected by suicide, we continue our work to improve prevention, risk detection, and treatment of suicidal youth."
